During Notting Hill Carnival some London Underground stations close temporarily to avoid congestion. Buses are a good option to get you to the outskirts of carnival, but whatever you do, don’t even think about driving. Leave the car at home. It is best to plan your journey, particularly if you aren’t familiar with West London’s streets. Transport for London has a great journey planner and it is a good idea to meet up early with friends and go together.
You will be spending all day on your feet, so wear good shoes for walking and dancing. Flip-flops are casual, but won’t protect your toes and you’ll tire quickly.
Travelling on a bank holiday.
The essential advice is to plan your travel. Remember some rail and bus services are subject to alteration on bank holidays. Being spontaneous is great and is, after all, the essence of Carnival. But spontaneity won’t always get you back home after the last train has departed. So… for a carefree weekend, a little prior planning makes all the difference.
