Travel light, bring happiness and goodwill.
Leave your cares at home and travel light. You don’t need much for a memorable weekend at Carnival. A happy smile and goodwill to everybody is infectious and you’ll soon find yourself making new friends. Discovering sensational new Caribbean cuisine is inevitable and you’ll find the urge to dance becomes irresistible.
Carnival is a wonderfully vibrant, colourful, happy, carefree celebration of Caribbean arts and culture. The mas bands spend many months preparing their exotic costumes for the procession. Some of the world’s very best steel bands compete at Panorama on Saturday night and perform in the parades throughout the weekend. Mobile sound systems fill the streets with music whilst the static sound systems DJs draw their loyal followings for hours of dancing in the street. Calypso and Soca add yet another authentic Caribbean vibe to Europe’s biggest and best Carnival music scene.
There are some 50,000 performers throughout the weekend and over 30 different sound systems. The event is open to all and numbers have always been difficult to gauge, but it is estimated that up to a million people enjoy Europe’s biggest Carnival every year.
Travelling light to Carnival is as much about lightness of spirit and joie de vivre as it is about leaving valuables at home. This year, everybody coming to Carnival is encouraged to leave bags at home. With security at events throughout the UK at heightened levels, it is reassuring to know that bags brought to Carnival are likely to be searched, for everybody’s protection. And anyway with a plentiful supply of delicious, freshly prepared Caribbean cuisine and ice cool drinks on street corners throughout Carnival, there’s no need to bring more than a sense of fun.
Additional safety measures to be introduced at this year’s event will mean that it has never been easier to relax and enjoy Carnival.
The new event management Twitter feed @W11Carnival will carry all the latest news and announcements in the run up to, and during Carnival. Carnival kicks off with Panorama on Saturday night. Proceedings start at 10.00am on both Sunday and Monday. Carnival’s best bands will be the first on the route to ensure they reach the judging point in good time. So be sure to come early to see the very best of the best!
